The Rise of Candid Wedding Photography: Why Couples Are Skipping the Poses

How Documentary-Style Wedding Photography is Changing the Game

The old days of stiff, overly posed wedding photos are over. Today’s couples want their wedding day to be captured as it naturally unfolds, leading to a surge in documentary-style photography. This approach prioritizes real moments over staged and posed photos, creating a wedding album that feels authentic, emotive, and true to the experience of the day.

Unlike traditional wedding photography, which often includes posed portraits and pre-planned shots, documentary wedding photography focuses on capturing real interactions, emotions, and the spontaneity of moments throughout your wedding day. It’s about telling the story of the day as it happened, without forced direction. Instead of posed or set moments, documentary photographers let them naturally develop, capturing the essence of your day in its most true unfiltered form.

Now this doesn’t mean that there isn’t any posed photos for your wedding party, or family formals, we know those are important too. And to be completely honest, I love getting those creative artistic photos that may need a bit of direction or “posing”.

I am seeing more couples that are drawn to documentary-style wedding photography because it allows them to relive their day exactly as it happened, the vibe the day had—without the pressure of posing or performing for the camera. Instead of stiff, uncomfortable portraits, they get to focus on each other, their loved ones, and the real emotions that unfold naturally. There’s a certain beauty in capturing raw, unscripted moments, the deep belly laughs, the unexpected tears, the perfect, and the imperfect. This style is all about preserving the atmosphere, the energy, and the personal connections that make each wedding unique. No forced smiles, no awkward poses—just real, honest memories that feel as genuine years later as they did in the moment.

A documentary style photographer acts as an observer, blending into the background while capturing the day as it happens. They focus on natural interactions, movement, and expressions to craft a cohesive story of the wedding day. Instead of directing the couple and guests, they anticipate moments, finding beauty in the quiet, in-between instances that often go unnoticed. You can read more about how I am able to anticipate things on a wedding day based on my other passion, hockey, HERE

Some of the most loved wedding images come from moments that are unrepeatable—the way a couple looks at each other during the vows, a spontaneous embrace between the bride and her father, or the raw emotions during a heartfelt speech. These are the types of memories that couples look back on and feel deeply connected to, making documentary photography an emotionally compelling choice. These types of moments, in my humble option, are best articulated in black and white. The removal of all color and possible distraction from the moment lets the emotion be the forefront of the image.

This approach to wedding photography requires a keen eye, patience, and the ability to anticipate moments before they happen. It’s about storytelling and keeping the vibe, where each frame contributes to the larger narrative of the wedding day. Since there is no staging, it also means photographers must work with available light, fast-moving action, and unpredictable conditions, but that’s where the magic happens—capturing the true energy of the day.

Also, with the rise of smaller, more intimate weddings, documentary photography has become even more on the radar for discerning brides. Couples who prioritize close relationships, deep conversations, and heartfelt interactions find that this approach preserves the essence of their wedding without distractions. Whether it’s a backyard wedding, a private elopement, or a simple courthouse ceremony, documentary-style photography thrives in these environments.

As weddings shift away from rigid timelines and overly structured events, more couples are embracing a laid-back approach to their big day. The desire to be fully present, rather than spending hours posing for formal photos, aligns with the growing trend of storytelling photography. It’s a movement toward letting weddings happen naturally rather than turning them into photoshoots.

It’s about capturing love in its truest form, real, unscripted, and beautifully imperfect. Instead of walking away with a series of staged images, you’ll have a collection of memories that bring you right back to the emotions, laughter, and heartfelt connections of your wedding day. If you want your wedding photos to reflect the actual experience rather than an idealized version of it, documentary-style wedding photography is a powerful and timeless choice.
