How Documentary-Style Wedding Photography is Changing the Game
The old days of stiff, overly posed wedding photos are over. Today’s couples want their wedding day to be captured as it naturally unfolds, leading to a surge in documentary-style photography. This approach prioritizes real moments over staged and posed photos, creating a wedding album that feels authentic, emotive, and true to the experience of the day.
Unlike traditional wedding photography, which often includes posed portraits and pre-planned shots, documentary wedding photography focuses on capturing real interactions, emotions, and the spontaneity of moments throughout your wedding day. Now this doesn’t mean that there isn’t any posed photos for your wedding party, or family formals, we know those are important too. And to be completely honest, I love getting those creative artistic photos that may need a bit of direction or “posing”.
I am seeing more couples that are drawn to documentary-style wedding photography because it allows them to relive their day exactly as it happened, the vibe the day had—without the pressure of posing or performing for the camera. Instead of stiff, uncomfortable portraits, they get to focus on each other, their loved ones, and the real emotions that unfold naturally. There’s a certain beauty in capturing raw, unscripted moments, the deep belly laughs, the unexpected tears, the perfect, and the imperfect. This style is all about preserving the atmosphere, the energy, and the personal connections that make each wedding unique. No forced smiles, no awkward poses—just real, honest memories that feel as genuine years later as they did in the moment.
